Character customization is one of the most popular elements in Final Fantasy XIV. The MMO allows players to choose from a variety of races and clans, all with their unique appearances and rich lore backgrounds. One of these races is the Au Ra, a human-like race with dragon scales and horns over their bodies.
FFXIV already offers many appearance customization features that players can use to create a unique character. Still, players share feedback on other features that can be added to improve this experience even further. In the keynotes of recent Fan Fest events, FFXIV Director Naoki Yoshida has already shared some of these planned additions, including allowing Au Ra players to choose different horn types for their favorite face presets. However, an unannounced Au Ra creation feature has been found by players in the new Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game.
The discovery comes from FFXIV content creator Tiffany Lockheart. On a Twitter/X post, Tiffany shares a video showcasing color changes to the Au Ra horns in the character creation menu of the Switch 2. This color change in the horns seems to be connected to the face paint color and is only possible in the Xaela clan of the Au Ra race. Additionally, it changes only horn color, not scales, and only Switch players are able to see these horn colors in other players as well.
Color customization of Au Ra horns and scales has been a request shared by Au Ra players for years, especially when new Au Ra NPCs in the game have arrived with a different color than the standard dark-blue and light-cream patterns. This feature hasn’t been officially announced by the Final Fantasy XIV team, so it seems that it was added by mistake in the recent Switch 2 release, and it is in the plans for one of the future appearance overhauls.
